This will be taking place in the Lecture Theater from 3.15-4.45. Everybody and anybody is welcome!

The lecture will be followed by ILLUSTRATION CAFE, which takes place in CB1.2 from 5.00-7.00. We will be looking at making small comics and illustrated narratives. Jack will be available to chat to and there may even be cake!

Inspired by vintage matchbox labels, I'd love to see your design, typography and illustrations that pay homage to these small treasures of graphic design. Traditionally, the box label messages were public service announcements, recommending citizens "Eat Vegetables" or "Be Careful with Matches" or "Save For Happiness" or "Alcohol Will Sink Your Plans". Or they celebrate more decorative topics like animals, national sports or fables. What is your modern take in subject matter for a modern matchbox label? Printed inexpensively, specimens from the 50s and 60s have lovely misregistration, overprinting and dot patterns. Feel free to emulate these effects in your design. The best ones will be published in the winter edition of UPPERCASE magazine (Issue #8, out in Jan/Feb 2011).

Submissions should 3" x 2" either horizontal or vertical and 300dpi. Please label the file with your last name and include your name, address and contact details when uploading it here

The 24HR Comic Etc.

This is an open call to all creative practitioners!

We are setting up an exciting follow-up to our 2009 Falmouth 24hr Comic. In January, February and March twenty-four participants will be challenged to each create twenty-four pieces in twenty-four hours. The events will allow the public to see creativity in action while the participants will gain a unique perspective on their own process.

We are looking for cartoonists, graphic novelists, poets, visual artists, photographers, sculptors, painters, anyone who can tell a story with their practice. Each event will also have conceptual inspiration which is defined by the local area.

If this sounds interesting to you, fill in and return this form found in the link above! If you have any examples of your work that you could send via email, please send them to 24hrcomicetc@gmail.com. Or any links to online portfolios or websites can be included in the form, or emailed.

Guest Speakers this year were NOBROW, CAFE ROYAL and printmaker ANDREW MOCKETT.

Be a part of Illustrative in Berlin!

In May 2011, the 6th Illustrative- the leading international festival for contemporary illustration and graphic arts, will take place in Berlin again.

Artists from all over the world can now apply for the festival: Until October 22nd, 2010 they can submit works in order to be considered for the Swatch Young Illustrators Award.
The Swatch Young Illustrators Award is an unique competition awarding creativity and innovation in personal contemporary illustration and graphics. The award encourages and supports designers in their artistic practice and offers an international and worldwide recognized platform for them. In three categories, illustrative art works, art projects with graphic influences, animations, installations and book art objects qualify for submission.

A jury, consisting of international art directors, well-known illustrators and publishers, will nominate artists in each category in October 2010. At Direktorenhaus in Berlin, the “Illustrators Night” will take place on November 5th, where the nominations will be celebrated with an exhibition and a party.
The Swatch Young Illustrators Award offers the winners not only the opportunity to be part of Illustrative in May 2011 in Berlin. Also, there are prizes waiting worth 6.000 Euros, publications and agency agreements as well as the one-time opportunity to design a limited edition for Swatch.

We had an inspirational day at the Cheltenham Illustration Awards on Thursday. It was great to see Isaac's work out there in the context of the exhibition, in amongst work of a really high standard (looking forward to the book out at the end of the year). Tom Gauld and Simone Lia have years of experience to draw from - both commercial and self initiated through Cabanon Press and other publications - and out of so many inspirational images that they showed is, this probably stayed with me more than any other...some people write stories and some other people write books about the way in which stories are constructed, but here's everything you need to know about storytelling in one image. Here are plenty more of Tom's illustrations (including sketchbook pages) on Flikr.

nearly got swept away at a rain soaked crafts fair on saturday but was all worth it for two reasons: discovering this gorgeous work by Lindsey Mann was one of them - clever collage jewellery inspired by old tin toys and tinkering inside old radios and the like...the other was Claire Loder (see above blog)
